Leonardo da Vinci and his journey to Romagna: discover Duomo di Faenza wine

In 1502 Leonardo da Vinci spent six months of his life in
Romagna, commissioned by Cesare Borgia to study new fortification systems and
infrastructures, to defend the possessions conquered by “Il
Valentino” and to delimit the borders of the Duchy of Romagna. During his
mission in the Romagna area, the Genius touches some of the most significant
cities including Cesena, Rimini, Cesenatico, Imola and Faenza, noting the
landscapes and architectural elements identifying these territories in his
travel notebooks.
Cantine Leonardo da Vinci pays homage to Leonardo’s journey
by reporting the various stages on the labels of the wines of the 1502 Da Vinciin Romagna Collection: a line dedicated to wines from the best Romagna
vineyards produced following the indications of Metodo Leonardo® (the wine
production protocol under the Cantine Leonardo da Vinci brand, which draws its
inspiration from Leonardo’s studies in the oenological field). If in a previous
article we explored the meaning of the Rocca di Cesena Sangiovese SuperioreRiserva Romagna DOC label, let’s now see together the sketch dedicated to Duomo di Faenza Trebbiano Romagna DOC wine.

Duomo di Faenza: from cathedral to wine

Leonardo da Vinci‘s stage in Faenza takes place between the departure from Cesenatico and the arrival in Imola. It is testified by the same drawing in which the perspective plan of the route to enter the Rocca Malatestiana in Cesena is depicted. In the upper part of the sketch, in fact, Leonardo drew a Latin cross church very similar to the Cathedral of Faenza in Piazza della Libertà: the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo. The wine inspired by this stage of Leonardo’s journey is the homonymous “Duomo di Faenza” Trebbiano Romagna DOC.
